The winter continues but spring is coming

The winter weather has forced our group indoors again, but we'll be out next week because of March Break and I'm sure we'll roll from there till the end of the month when I'll take a break for my vacation. However, I'm sure the group will have the motivation to continue on their own.
The core group of 8-10 is clicking into the Chi routine and I believe they're seeing the rational. We've even noticed that the distint Chi gait is catching to the extent that some of the custodians at the school were copying us as they travelled the halls doing their work.

Chi Walking outdoors

It's been a month since the start of the Chi Walking program. Most sessions have been indoors at a local school, but we did have one session using facilities and the parking lot of a local Super Store. The group now averages 8-10 which is good. We continue to perfect the technique around good core use, posture, balance and breathing.
Stay tuned and 'keep on walking'.

Chi Walking Session 1

Right into session 1 of Chi Walking and here's the hi-lites:
- Begin with a routine to flex the joints and ligaments that are part of Chi Walking.
Curl the toes, walk on your heels, walk on your toes. Put your ankle behind and use knee rotations to rotate the ankles both ways. Hold the knees together and do knee rotations. Draw your leg up into the hip joint. Do leg rotations into the hip, again using the knee to generate the rotation. Do Hula Hoop hip rotations. Stretch the rotator cuff in the shoulder by flexing your arm behind your back and both ways. Flex the spine; hands behind the head & flex sideways, then twist and bend sideways to look at opposite ankle. Gentle neck rotations and we're ready to walk.

- Breathing is also important: Draw in a deep breath thru the mouth, letting the belly expand and then exhale thru the nose using the diaphram to exhale completely which is the important part.

- Core strengthening was introduced and demonstrated using several exercises. The success of the whole program is based on the implementation of a comprehensive core routine which we will build during session 2.

- The Chi Walking technique was introduced by showing how our bodies rotate around the core and how the arms and legs follow sync which ultimately minimizes stress and strain on our joints. A 10 minute walk around the halls provided a practise and a means to reflect on how it feels.

A new start

Well here we are into a new year and the 2010 KVC Marathon is history. Kudos to Chair Alex Coffin and his committees for boosting numbers and making it another successful event.

This week I'm attending a Run NB workshop that will be striving to improve the sport.
I will certainly be lending my input to strengthen the viability of the marathon itself.

Also, this week, I am starting a fitness program called Chi Walking which is a spin-off from the core exercise program that I've offered over the past two years.

Therefore, I will also use this site to update activities related to this program.

Stay tuned.

Laments before moving on......

It's almost a year since I ended my term as a marathon organizer and I feel I need to share a couple of laments and then move on from here.

My original goal to showcase the marathon as an event unto itself fell short even with the help of a great committee and great sponsors. The marathon is the only internationally recognized foot race(i.e.Olympics) that uses the road ways as its venue. All other road races are secondary to the marathon yet here in this area its the other way around. The only way to properly showcase the marathon is to have it as a solo event. Also, because of our demographics we should only have one or two marathons a year. Run NB should take a lead with this. Developing the marathon this way would help aspiring athletes better pursue the sport and also help Canada place a marathoner on the Olympic team for the future.

My other lament is with respect to fund raisers using running venues to raise their funds. Road Running venues belong to the runners both recreational and otherwise who look to have their sport recgnized as such by the community and the media. Fund raisers do some great things to tap into disposable incomes for research needs, but they need to look to other venues such as science expos, etc that could not only generate funds but encourage people to get into science and research.

OK, I'm done. Maybe I'll get into politics from here. However, I must finish on a positive note by saying that it's been a good run and I wish Alex and other event organizers all the best in promoting this great sport of ours(running, the first sport of the human race).

Less than 2 weeks to marathon day

It's almost Thanksgiving so the marathon is just around the corner. I went out yesterday with son Sean for his last distance run before he tapers. It worked out to over an hour an a half with a couple of tough hills which showed that I'm lacking but Sean's ready and I hope all the other stalwarts are as well.

Being out of the organizing side of the event has been rather nice and allowed me to watch from the outside. Alex and company are putting together a good event and the numbers show. So, here's hoping for a good day. I'll be working the set up operations as a contract for the event. This will be a first for a local run as far as I know. If it proves to be successful and acceptable, maybe other events will do something similar.

Stay tuned.
